Un puissant séisme de magnitude 7.8 a frappé, ce lundi, la Turquie et la Syrie, faisant état de plusieurs centaines de morts et des milliers de blessés. Les dégâts sont énormes.
Selon les données provisoires communiquées par le vice-président turc, Fuat Oktay, au moins 284 personnes ont été tuées en Turquie dans sept différentes provinces, et au moins 2 320 blessées. De l’autre côté, le ministère syrien de la Santé a fait état d’au moins 237 morts et 639 blessés.
Selon les données de l’Institut Sismologique Américain(USGS), le tremblement de terre a eu lieu à 4 h 17 locales (1 h 17 GMT), à une profondeur d’environ 17,9 kilomètres. L’épicentre se situe au Sud-Est de la Turquie, dans la province de Kahramanmaras, à 60 km environ à vol d’oiseau de la frontière syrienne, pour sa part frappée au nord.
Les images diffusées par les médias turcs et syriens montrent de nombreux bâtiments effondrés, alors que les secouristes turcs de la défense civile, ainsi que les pompiers syriens, sont à l’oeuvre pour tenter d’extraire plus de victimes possible des décombres.
« Toutes nos équipes sont en alerte. Nous avons émis une alarme de niveau quatre. C’est un appel y compris à l’aide internationale », a annoncé sur la chaîne Haberturk, le ministre turc de l’Intérieur, Süleyman Soylu.
C’est le plus grand séisme enregistré dans la région depuis plus de 20 ans, et les chiffres devraient augmenter, pourvu que le nombre de victimes dans les régions syriennes tenues par les rebelles n’est pas encore connu.
