Les États-Unis ont envoyé des chiens fabriqués pour patrouiller le long de leur frontière avec le Mexique. Selon eux, ces chiens robotiques pourraient constituer des “renforts mécaniques” pour les gardes-frontières.
Le département de la sécurité intérieure (DHS) a déclaré la semaine dernière que son service de recherche et de développement avait offert aux gardes-frontières « un coup de main » pour “multiplier en force” les patrouilles.
Selon Brenda Long, responsable du programme de développement du DHS, « la frontière sud peut être un endroit inhospitalier pour l’homme comme pour les animaux, c’est pourquoi une machine peut y exceller ». Les machines dont parle la responsable sont des robots construits par la compagnie « Ghost Robotics ». Le modèle le plus vendu par ce constructeur est le Ghost Vision 60, une machine de 76 cm de haut et de 32 kg.
Ce chien robot en question peut parcourir 12 kilomètres en trois heures sur une seule charge. Il peut être contrôlé à distance ou se déplacer de manière autonome. L’un des intérêts du quadrupède est qu’il est en mesure de transporter de l’équipement, comme des caméras à vision thermique et nocturne. Selon les autorités américaines, les robots ont patrouillé de manière autonome sur des lieux préalablement signalés sur GPS, tout en transportant du matériel. Ils ont aussi servi à l’inspection de wagons de train et à l’exploration de bâtiments résidentiels. Un scénario impliquait également une simulation de rencontre avec des individus potentiellement hostiles.
Toutefois, il faut noter que les agents fédéraux opérant le long de la frontière mexicaine sont depuis longtemps accusés de mauvaise conduite et de mauvais traitement à l’égard des migrants et des demandeurs d’asile qui tentent d’entrer aux États-Unis. L’administration de Joe Biden a été vivement critiquée par les défenseurs des réfugiés pour le nombre croissant d’immigrants détenus dans des installations privées.
En désaccord avec l’utilisation de ces machines, « l’American Civil Liberties Union » a averti semaine dernière que le projet de Washington d’utiliser des chiens de patrouille robotisés à ses frontières était “un désastre en matière de libertés civiles”.
