Fred Mitchell autorise le retrait des militaires bahamiens en Haïti sans approbation officielle

Fred Mitchell, ministre des Affaires étrangères des Bahamas, a annoncé ce mercredi 13 novembre 2024, que les militaires bahamiens en mission en Haïti peuvent se retirer sans autorisation gouvernementale s’ils se sentent en danger. Cette décision concerne les membres de la Force de défense royale des Bahamas (RBDF), déployés en Haïti pour aider à restaurer la sécurité dans un pays en proie aux violences des gangs.

 

Cette mesure diffère des pratiques habituelles des missions de maintien de la paix. Normalement, un ordre formel est requis pour tout retrait. Mitchell a expliqué dans un message au journal Tribune que le gouvernement surveille la situation « de jour en jour, minute par minute » et assure que « personne ne sera mis en danger ».

Certains voient dans cette flexibilité un signe de prudence face à une crise de sécurité. En effet, Bahamasair a suspendu ses vols vers Haïti, rejoignant plusieurs compagnies américaines qui ont pris la même décision après des tirs visant des avions commerciaux.

Cependant, des critiques y voient un manque de détermination. Pour eux, cette décision pourrait affaiblir la mission de la CARICOM en Haïti. À un moment où le rôle des pays voisins est crucial, cette latitude pour un retrait volontaire des militaires pourrait être interprétée comme un signe de faiblesse.
