Une nouvelle évasion a eu lieu à la prison civile de Port-de-Paix. Huit détenus se sont échappés dans la nuit du vendredi 3 au samedi 4 mai 2024, tandis que cinq autres ont été abattus par les autorités locales alors qu’ils tentaient de fuir.
Lors d’une conférence de presse, Leonel JOSEPH, le porte-parole de la police départementale du Nord-Ouest, a annoncé que six des huit détenus évadés avaient déjà été capturés. Les autorités ont également été contraintes d’intervenir à l’intérieur de la prison, où plus de quatre détenus ont perdu la vie alors qu’ils tentaient de s’échapper.
La totalité des détenus se trouvaient entassés dans une seule cellule, comprenant un total de 37 individus, tous condamnés pour des crimes violents, les rendant ainsi particulièrement dangereux, selon les dires du substitut commissaire du gouvernement, Jeir PIERRE.
Des informations provenant des autorités policières indiquent que l’évasion a débuté dans la cellule où étaient détenus les criminels les plus dangereux de la région. Un détenu notoire de Port-de-Paix a prétendu être malade, et pendant que les agents tentaient de lui porter assistance, les autres ont lancé leur assaut.
Il convient de noter que ces événements ne sont pas nouveaux, étant donné la série d’attaques de gangs ayant secoué le pays depuis la fin du mois de février, provoquant même la démission du Premier ministre Ariel HENRY. Selon les données des autorités, plus de 4600 personnes ont réussi à s’évader dans deux des plus grandes prisons du pays au cours de cette période de crise.
Ces événements tragiques soulignent une fois de plus les défis auxquels est confrontée Haïti en matière de sécurité et de gouvernance, alors que le pays tente de trouver des solutions pour restaurer l’ordre public sous un nouveau gouvernement de transition.
