L’étude a été portée sur 19 946 mères, incluant leurs enfants, de façon rétrospective de 2014-2018 du Service de santé métropolitaine du sud-est de Santiago, Chili. Le constat est que l’obésité augmente chez les femmes enceintes ou en âge d’être enceintes, avec une prévalence allant de 1.8 % à 25.3 % dans différents pays du monde. Au Chili, 23.6 % des femmes en âge de procréer et 20.9 % des femmes enceintes étaient obèses entre 2009 et 2010.
Les résultats de cette étude ont montré que 28.8% des mères ont été obèses au début de leur grossesse. « Dans notre population de cohorte d’étude, composée de 19 546 mères, 28.8 % étaient obèses en début de grossesse. Les femmes obèses avaient en moyenne 1.9 ans de plus que celles non obèses, et les obèses étaient particulièrement surreprésentés dans le groupe des 35 ans et plus », peut-on lire dans le rapport d’étude.
L’obésité de la mère au début de la grossesse est associée à une morbidité accrue chez les nouveau-nés. « L’obésité maternelle en début de grossesse peut être positivement associée à la mortalité néonatale et à la macrosomie fœtale. Le risque de mortalité néonatale et de macrosomie fœtale est directement proportionnel au niveau d’IMC maternel préconceptionnel, à partir d’un IMC supérieur à la normale. La prise de poids importante lors de la grossesse est généralement associée positivement à la macrosomie et à l’admission néonatale aux urgences, alors qu’elle semble être associée négativement au faible poids de naissance et à la naissance prématurée», a conclu la cohorte. En termes de recommandation, il est conseillé de favoriser le maintien d’un poids normal avant la grossesse et une prise de poids gestationnelle adéquate .
