Le Ministère de la Justice aux USA a annoncé mardi avoir mis la main sur plus de 94 000 BTC (bitcoins). Une somme volée à la plateforme d’échanges Bitfinex et évaluée au moment de la récupération à 3,6 milliards de dollars. Un couple New-yorkais sous les verrous.
Accusés de blanchiment d’argent et de fraude fiscale, les deux individus, Ilya Dutch Lichtenstein, 34 ans, et sa femme, Heather Morgan, 31 ans, ont été arrêtés à Manhattan mardi 8 février 2022, après avoir dépensé une partie de leur argent dans de l’or, des non NFT (non-fungible token) et autres.
Le couple est accusé d’avoir participé à un « complot présumé en vue de blanchir de la cryptomonnaie volée lors du piratage en 2016 de Bitfinex, un bureau de change virtuel, potentiellement valorisé de nos jours à environ 4,5 milliards de dollars », ont annoncé les autorités dans un communiqué.
Les procureurs ont déclaré qu’ils suivaient l’argent depuis plusieurs années et qu’ils ont finalement pu le récupérer après avoir obtenu un mandat de perquisition pour un compte dans le Cloud détenu par le couple, où les enquêteurs ont trouvé les clés de centaines de comptes cryptographiques contenant les 3,6 milliards de dollars en BTC.
« Dans un effort futile pour maintenir l’anonymat numérique, les accusés ont blanchi des fonds volés à travers un labyrinthe de transactions de cryptomonnaie. Grâce au travail méticuleux des forces de l’ordre, le ministère a une fois de plus montré comment il peut suivre et suivra l’argent, quelle que soit sa forme », a prévenu fermement le procureur général Lisa O. Monaco.
Pour Kenneth A. Polite Jr, assistant du procureur: Détourner des cryptomonnaies ne constitue pas un refuge pour le blanchiment d’argent ou une zone d’anarchie au sein du système financier des États-Unis. La Justice américaine incrimine le couple pour avoir conspiré de blanchir le produit de 119 754 bitcoins qui ont été volés sur la plateforme de Bitfinex. Cette plateforme avait été visée par un pirate informatique en 2016 et initié plus de 2 000 transactions non autorisées. Ces transactions non autorisées ont envoyé les bitcoins volés vers un portefeuille numérique géré par le couple.
Par ailleurs, on note que les deux escrocs avaient aussi tenté de blanchir de l’argent via un réseau de change en liaison avec plusieurs de leurs start-up créés dans différents secteurs des nouvelles technologies. Paradoxale que cela puisse paraître, l’une de leurs sociétés était conçue afin de prodiguer des conseils sur comment « protéger son entreprise contre les cybercriminels ».
Cette affaire démontre clairement l’un des atouts de la blockchain qui est un véritable livre à ciel ouvert, sur lequel peuvent circuler les cryptomonnaies. Cette nouvelle technologie permet de suivre et de retracer l’argent plus aisément que dans le cas du blanchiment classique avec de la monnaie fiduciaire.
