Près de 42 morts, 85 blessés et 11 personnes portées disparues lors des dernières pluies diluviennes qui se sont abattues sur plus de 7 départements du pays. Le département de l’Ouest a enregistré 21 morts et le Sud-est en a compté 7, selon les chiffres communiqués par les autorités gouvernementales.
La Direction de la Protection Civile a fait état de 42 personnes mortes, 11 disparues et 85 autres blessées. Ajouter à cela, 7.475 familles sont sinistrées et 13.633 maisons inondées durant les deux journées d’averses, les 3 et 4 juin 2023.
Alors que les premiers chiffres recensaient une quinzaine de morts, 8 personnes portées disparues, 7475 familles sinistrées, 160 maisons sont détruites ou endommagées, 13.390 déplacés sont recensés et 1219 maisons sont inondées, poursuit la DGPC.
Les départements de l’Ouest, du Sud-Est, de la Grand’Anse, des Nippes et du Nord-Est sont les plus touchés par les fortes pluies torrentielles, mais l’Ouest reste celui le plus touché, surtout la commune de Léogane, ont précisé les autorités gouvernementales.
Près de 17 morts, 6.000 familles sinistrées, 7.700 maisons inondées, 2.500 têtes de bétail emportées dans la Cité d’Anacaona, selon la Mairie de ladite commune.
Plusieurs cas de la maladie choléra ont été signalés dans les départements du Sud-est et de la Grande-Anse. Le secteur agricole a été fortement touché par les intempéries surtout dans le Centre, la Grande-Anse, le Nord-Ouest, l’Ouest où plusieurs plantations ont été ravagées par les eaux.
La saison cyclonique a été officiellement ouverte le le 1er juin 2023, et prendra fin jusqu’au 30 novembre prochain dans le bassin Caribéen, l’Atlantique Nord et le Golfe du Mexique. Les prévisions pour la saison cyclonique, au cours de cette année, prévoient à la moyenne 12 à 17 tempêtes nommées, dont 5 à 9 pourraient se transformer en OURAGAN, dont 1 à 4 pourraient être majeurs. Les noms des ouragans de la saison cyclonique 2023 dans l’Atlantique sont les suivants : Arlène – Bret – Cindy – Don – Emily – Franklin – Gert – Harold – Idalia – Jose – Katia – Lee – Margot – Nigel – Ophélia – Philippe – Rina – Sean – Tammy -Vince – Whitney. Exposée annuellement à des cyclones, la République d’Haïti est considérée désormais comme le pays le plus vulnérable de tous les petits États de la Caraïbe avec le plus haut indice de vulnérabilité aux cyclones (12,9 sur une échelle de 13). On lui reconnait même un profil de risque de 6,1 contre une moyenne de 2,8 pour le reste de la région d’après les données du Programme des Nations Unies publiées en 2016.
Le Coordonateur Général de l’Unité Hydrométéorologique (UHM), Marcelin Esterlin, avait déclaré, lors d’un point de presse tenu le 4 juin dernier, qu’il s’agit d’un mauvais temps sur le pays mais ce n’est pas un cyclone, ni une tempête tropicale. Face à cette saison cyclonique, plus d’un se demande quel est le sort de la population face à cet État de pompier? Si Haïti peine à faire face à quelques gouttes de pluie, ne doit-on pas craindre pour la saison cyclonique qui commence déjà sur des mauvaises notes. De plus, en Haïti, l’activité cyclonique atteint des sommets entre les mois d’août et d’octobre, on n’est est qu’au mois de juin.
Au cours de la période 1900-2011, on a recensé, en Haïti, 32 catastrophes naturelles affectant près de 800.000 personnes, faisant plus de 1.100 victimes et causant des dommages et des pertes matériels estimés à 897 millions de dollars US selon le GRH, 2008. L’effet combiné des vents forts et des pluies intenses a provoqué de très fortes inondations. Depuis le début du XXIe siècle, on estime que plus de 5 millions d’Haïtiens ont été affectés par les cyclones tropicaux. Haïti est caractérisé par une très grande vulnérabilité environnementale, économique et sociale.
