L’ex policier Derek Chauvin, condamné à 22 ans et demi de prison pour le meurtre de l’Afro-américain Georges Floyd, remet en cause 14 points de sa condamnation. Il reproche au juge de ne pas avoir isolé les jurés durant le procès.
Derek Chauvin, l’ex policier américain qui a été condamné par la justice de Minnesota pour le meurtre de Georges Floyd en mai dernier, a décidé d’attaquer en appel 14 points de sa condamnation à 22 ans et demi de prison prononcée en juin 2020, selon les documents judiciaires dévoilés jeudi 23 Septembre. Il se plaint notamment du fait que le juge n’ait pas ordonné la mise à l’isolement des jurés pendant la durée du procès.
Le 25 mai 2020, Derek Chauvin, 44 ans, avait voulu arrêté Georges Floyd, soupçonné d’avoir utilisé un faux billet de 20 dollars pour acheter des cigarettes. Avec ses trois autres collègues policiers, il l’avait alors plaqué au sol, avant de s’agenouiller sur son coup.
Le policier avait maintenu sa pression pendant près de dix minutes, indifférent aux râles de George Floyd, mais aussi aux supplications de passants affolés, et ce même une fois le pouls du quadragénaire devenu indétectable.
Depuis, des manifestations se sont multipliées partout et ailleurs contre le racisme et les violences policières aux États-Unis et dans le monde entier, et le mouvement Black Live Matter a vu le jour.
La condamnation de l’auteur principal du meurtre de George Floyd avait été accueillie par un grand soupir de soulagement, notamment en raison des manifestations, parfois émaillées de violences à nouveau s’il ressortait libre des audiences.
Outre Derek Chauvin, ses trois anciens collègues, Tou Thao, Alexander Kueng et Thomas Lane, doivent être jugés en mars 2022 pour « complicité de meurtre » également par la justice du Minnesota.
