11 Septembre 2001: date historique et tragique pour les Américains
11 septembre 2001, l’organisation terroriste djihadiste Al-Qaïda a attaqué les États-Unis dans un attentat qui a causé près de 3 000 morts et plus de 6 000 blessés. Les États-Unis commémorent aujourd’hui ces 20 ans de tragédie et rendent hommage aux victimes.
Le mardi matin 11 septembre 2001, 19 pirates de l’air de l’organisation terroriste djihadiste Al-Qaïda, sous la direction d’Oussama Ben Laden, ont détourné 4 avions de ligne partis d’aéroports de la côte Est, de Boston, de Washington et de Newark. Tous ces appareils étaient à destination de la Californie.
Deux de ces engins ont percuté les deux Tours jumelles du World Trade Center, au sud de Manatthan, un troisième éventra le Pentagone et le dernier s’est écrasé en Pennsylvanie après que les passagers ont empêché les 4 pirates à bord de bien manipuler leur opération. Les 44 passagers et membres de l’équipage ont été tous décédés dans le crash. La quatrième cible serait le Capitol, symbole de la politique américaine ou la Maison Blanche qui représente la grande puissance des Etats-Unis dans le monde.
Les moments clés de la journée de l’attentat
8h46 : le vol 11 d’American Airlines, un Boeing 767 parti de Boston pour Los Angeles avec 92 personnes à bord – dont cinq pirates de l’air – frappe la tour nord du World Trade Center. Il ouvre une gigantesque brèche dans les étages supérieurs qui s’enflamment.

– 9h03 : le vol 175 de United Airlines, également un Boeing 767 reliant Boston à Los Angeles, avec 65 personnes à bord donc cinq pirates, se fracasse à son tour contre les étages supérieurs de la tour sud.

– 9h05, Sarasota, Floride : le président George W. Bush commence à lire une histoire à des enfants d’une école primaire. « Un deuxième avion a frappé la deuxième tour. L’Amérique est attaquée« , lui glisse à l’oreille son chef de cabinet.

– 9h25 : les autorités de l’aviation civile, la FAA, annoncent la fermeture de l’espace aérien américain et interdisent tout décollage.
9h30 : George W. Bush annonce aux écoliers qu’il rentre à Washington en raison d’une « apparente attaque terroriste« .
– 9h37 : le vol 77 d’American Airlines, un Boeing 757 parti de l’aéroport Dulles près de Washington pour San Francisco avec 64 personnes à bord dont cinq pirates, s’écrase sur la façade ouest du Pentagone.

– 9h42 : la FAA ordonne à tous les avions en vol d’atterrir au plus vite.
– 9h59 : la tour sud s’effondre dans un déluge de feu, d’acier et de poussière. La violence est telle qu’aucune trace d’ADN n’a jamais été retrouvée pour des centaines de victimes.

– 10h03, Shanksville (Pennsylvanie) : le vol 93 de United Airlines, parti de Newark (New Jersey) à destination de San Francisco avec 44 personnes à bord dont quatre pirates, s’écrase à Shanksville, une zone boisée de l’ouest de la Pennsylvanie. Certains passagers, informés par téléphone portable de ce qui se passait à New York, ont résisté aux terroristes.
– 10h28 : la tour nord s’écroule, 102 minutes après avoir été touchée. La pointe sud de Manhattan est couverte d’un nuage de cendres et de débris.
– 13h04, Etat de Louisiane : George W. Bush, qui a été évacué sur la base aérienne de Barksdale, place les forces armées en « état d’alerte maximum » et promet de « traquer et punir les lâches responsables » des attentats. Le président sera ensuite transféré sur la base aérienne d’Offutt, dans le Nebraska avant de rentrer à la Maison Blanche dans la soirée.
– 13h27, Washington : le maire Anthony Williams décrète l’état d’urgence dans la capitale fédérale.
– 20h30 : George W. Bush s’adresse aux Américains, dénonce des « actes terroristes délibérés ». Il promet d’en traquer les responsables et avertit que Washington ne fera « aucune distinction » entre les terroristes et ceux qui les abritent.
Commémoration du 11 septembre
Minutes de silence, lecture des noms des victimes et moments de recueillement: les américains ont rendu hommage aujourd’hui, à Ground Zero, aux victimes de l’attentat. L’ex président Barack Obama et sa femme Michel Obama étaient présents au Mémorial.
Le président américain, Joe Biden, s’est rendu sur chacun des sites où les avions se sont écrasés. Vendredi 10 septembre il a appelé les américains à l’unité dans une vidéo enregistrée: « Quand nous sommes le plus vulnérable, tiraillés entre tout ce qui fait de nous des humains, dans la bataille pour l’âme de l’Amérique, l’unité est notre plus grande force. L’unité ne signifie pas que nous devons croire en la même chose. Mais nous devons avoir un respect et une foi les uns envers les autres, et en cette nation ».
George W. Bush, qui dirigeait le pays au moment des attentats, a prononcé un discours sur le site de Pennsylvanie. « Je viens sans explications ni solutions. Je peux seulement vous dire ce que j’ai vu. En ce jour d’épreuve et de deuil de l’Amérique, j’ai vu des millions de personnes saisir instinctivement la main de leur voisin et se rallier à la cause des uns et des autres. Voilà l’Amérique que je connais », a-t-il notamment déclaré.
