Donald TRUMP a une nouvelle fois remis en cause l’engagement des États-Unis d’Amérique envers l’Organisation du Traité Atlantique Nord (OTAN). Il a déclaré, le 6 mars 2025, que l’article 5, qui garantit la défense collective, pourrait ne pas être respecté. Selon lui, les États-Unis ne défendraient pas les pays membres qui ne contribuent pas assez à la défense commune.
«S’ils ne paient pas, je ne vais pas les défendre», a indiqué le Président américain, qui n’en est pas à sa première sortie du genre.
Il a insisté sur le fait que les pays membres de l’OTAN devraient payer plus pour leurs dépenses militaires. TRUMP a également exprimé son inquiétude quant à la solidarité des alliés européens en cas de crise.
«Mon plus gros problème avec l’OTAN, c’est que si les États-Unis avaient un problème et qu’on appelait la France ou d’autres pays, vous pensez qu’ils viendraient nous aider, comme ils sont censés le faire ? Je n’en suis pas sûr», a-t-il lancé.
Les propos de TRUMP ont ravivé les tensions sur le financement des dépenses militaires au sein de l’Alliance. Il a souligné le respect et l’amitié de la France envers les États-Unis, tout en estimant qu’elle était en droit de recevoir la même chose en retour. Il a rappelé les moments historiques de solidarité, notamment la contribution du marquis de Lafayette à l’indépendance des États-Unis et le débarquement des forces américaines en Normandie en 1944.
