Autrefois incontournable lors du Vendredi Saint, la tradition du cerf-volant ou (kap, en créole) se fait aujourd’hui de plus en plus discrète dans le ciel haïtien. Cette pratique festive, symbole de liberté et de créativité populaire, est en passe de disparaître, emportée par la spirale de violences qui gangrène le pays.
Au mois de mars et d’avril, les cieux d’Haïti s’ornaient jadis de cerfs-volants aux mille couleurs, filant au gré du vent au-dessus des toits et des champs. Dans les zones urbaines comme dans les milieuxruraux, petits et grands rivalisaient d’adresse pour faire virevolter leurs créations artisanales. Ces affrontements aériens, souvent stratégiques, mettaient en scène des fils enduits de verre pilé (gilet bouilli) ou de lames de rasoir, utilisés pour trancher ceux de l’adversaire. Une tradition ancrée, transmise de génération en génération.
Mais cette image joyeuse semble aujourd’hui reléguée au passé. Dans de nombreuses zones, faire voler un kap est devenu un acte téméraire, voire impossible. La faute à une insécurité omniprésente, alimentée par les affrontements entre groupes armés, dont le collectif « Viv Ansanm » incarne la brutalité croissante. Sortir un cerf-volant, monter sur un toit ou simplement occuper l’espace public relèvent désormais du défi.
La peur des balles perdues, les déplacements forcés de la population et le contrôle de quartiers entiers par des gangs ont transformé l’environnement quotidien. Les préoccupations vitales ont pris le pas sur les loisirs. Les cerfs-volants ne font plus rêver; ils rappellent un passé révolu.
Quelques commerçants, toutefois, tentent de résister. Ils exposent encore, çà et là, quelques kap, espérant capter la nostalgie ou la témérité de quelques acheteurs. Et dans de rares quartiers encore épargnés, on aperçoit parfois ces silhouettes colorées s’élever dans le ciel, comme un souffle d’espoir, une mémoire vivante.
Le kap n’est pas qu’un jeu. Il est un emblème culturel, une poésie populaire, un lien entre les générations. Mais sa survie est menacée, comme tant d’autres repères de l’identité haïtienne.
Combien de Vendredis Saints nous reste-t-il encore à célébrer sous des cieux non colorés de cerfs-volants ?
