Les Bahamas ont annoncé, cette semaine, le déploiement de deux navires militaires dans les eaux haïtiennes, à partir du 22 décembre 2024. Wayne MUNROE, ministre de la Sécurité nationale, a précisé que cette mission visera à intercepter les armes illégales et à freiner les migrations clandestines. Elle aura également pour objectif de protéger les frontières bahamiennes, tout en répondant aux défis sécuritaires de la région.
Les navires HMBS Bahamas et HMBS Nassau, chacun doté d’un équipage de 60 personnes, seront déployés dans les zones stratégiques proches d’Haïti. Leur mission principale sera d’assurer une surveillance maritime rigoureuse pour empêcher la contrebande et les mouvements migratoires illégaux. Ces opérations devraient durer entre quatre et six semaines.
Le ministre MUNROE a, par ailleurs, souligné que cette initiative s’inscrit dans une stratégie visant à renforcer la sécurité maritime régionale. En tant que nation insulaire, les Bahamas cherchent à limiter les impacts des activités illégales transitant par Haïti, tout en collaborant avec d’autres pays pour stabiliser la région.
Les autorités bahamiennes espèrent que ce déploiement permettra de mieux contrôler les mouvements maritimes illégaux et de renforcer la sécurité de leurs frontières. Elles réaffirment leur engagement à travailler avec leurs voisins ainsi que d’autres partenaires internationaux pour relever les défis communs.
