Une vidéo diffusée sur les réseaux sociaux le jeudi 16 décembre montre des traces lumineuses dans le ciel de Port-au-Prince, en Haïti. Ces images, rapidement devenues virales, ont suscité un vent de panique parmi les habitants, certains craignent une catastrophe imminente. Ces phénomènes lumineux, associés à la chute de débris, provenaient du vaisseau spatial Starship de SpaceX, détruit en plein vol lors de son 7ᵉ essai.
Contrairement aux nombreuses spéculations, SpaceX a confirmé que l’incident était dû à une série d’anomalies affectant les moteurs du deuxième étage du Starship. Le vaisseau avait décollé depuis Boca Chica, au Texas, à 16h37 (heure locale). Les premières phases de la mission s’étaient déroulées comme prévu, notamment la séparation des deux étages à T+2 minutes 44 secondes et la récupération réussie du Super Heavy Booster.
L’échec est survenu à T+7 minutes lorsque l’un des six moteurs de l’étage supérieur a cessé de fonctionner, suivi de quatre autres. À T+8 minutes 26 secondes, le vaisseau a perdu toute communication avec le centre de contrôle, signalant sa désintégration à 146 km d’altitude. Les débris dispersés dans les Caraïbes, y compris ceux observés au-dessus de Port-au-Prince, étaient une conséquence directe de cette panne.
Dans une déclaration officielle, SpaceX a reconnu cet échec, tout en soulignant le caractère expérimental de la mission. Kate Tice, ingénieure de l’entreprise, a affirmé que les leçons tirées de cet incident permettront de mieux préparer les essais futurs. L’objectif du vol était de tester une nouvelle version du Starship, capable de transporter des charges plus lourdes et de déployer des satellites Starlink de nouvelle génération en orbite.
Malgré cet échec, l’entreprise continue d’avancer, en transformant chaque revers en opportunité pour progresser vers ses objectifs.
