Dans un message publié sur son compte twitter, le président ukrainien, Volodymyr Zelensky, a invité, mardi 22 mars, le pape François à jouer le rôle de médiateur dans les négociations entre Kiev et Moscou.
« On apprécierait le rôle médiateur du Saint-Siège pour mettre fin à la souffrance humaine», a écrit M. Zelensky sur Twitter suite à un entretien téléphonique avec le pape François. Cependant, peu avant, le Kremlin a jugé peu succulent les pourparlers en cours avec Kiev.
Le Chef d’État ukrainien a aussi déclaré avoir informé le numéro un du Vatican de « la situation humanitaire difficile et du blocage des couloirs humanitaires par les troupes russes », tout en le remerciant pour ses « prières pour l’Ukraine et la paix ».
Le pape François a multiplié les appels à la paix depuis le début de l’invasion russe qui a causé énormément de pertes en vie humaine au sein de la population ukrainienne.
Majoritairement orthodoxe, l’Ukraine compte une importante minorité gréco-catholique, ce qui fait de la religion catholique la troisième Église en Ukraine avec près de 5,5 millions de fidèles dans tout le pays.
