États-Unis – Nécrologie : L’ancien président américain Jimmy Carter est décédé à l’âge de 100 ans
L’ancien président américain Jimmy CARTER s’est éteint paisiblement, ce dimanche 29 décembre 2024, à l’âge de 100 ans dans son domicile à Plains, en Géorgie. La nouvelle a été confirmée par son fils, Chip Carter et relayée par de nombreux médias américains.
Né le 1er octobre 1924 à Plains, James Earl CARTER Jr a débuté comme fermier, officier de la marine avant de se hisser sur la scène politique nationale. En 1976, il est élu 39ème président des États-Unis, se présentant comme un outsider déterminé à rétablir la confiance dans le gouvernement après les scandales de l’époque, notamment celui du Watergate.
Pendant son mandat (1977-1981), Carter a marqué l’histoire en plaçant les droits de l’homme au centre de la politique étrangère américaine. Il a notamment été l’artisan du traité de paix historique entre l’Égypte et Israël, connu sous le nom des Accords de Camp David. Sur le plan interne, il a créé le Département de l’Énergie en réponse aux crises énergétiques des années 1970. Cependant, son mandat a également été assombri par des difficultés économiques et la crise des otages en Iran, qui ont contribué à sa défaite lors des élections de 1980.
Après sa présidence, CARTER a redéfini le rôle des anciens Chefs d’État. En 1982, avec son épouse Rosalynn, il fonde le Carter Center, une organisation dédiée à la promotion des droits de l’homme et à l’amélioration de la santé publique mondiale. Ensemble, ils ont supervisé des élections dans plus de 40 pays et participé à des initiatives humanitaires majeures, contribuant notamment à l’éradication du ver de Guinée.
En 2002, Jimmy CARTER reçoit le prix Nobel de la paix, saluant ses efforts à résoudre les conflits internationaux et promouvoir la justice sociale. Même à un âge avancé, il a continué à travailler sur des projets comme Habitat for Humanity, construisant des logements pour les plus démunis.
Jimmy CARTER laisse derrière lui un héritage d’intégrité, de service et de compassion. Son parcours exemplaire inspire l’idée qu’il est possible, même dans les périodes les plus troublantes, de défendre la paix et la dignité humaine. Il restera une figure emblématique, incarnant l’espoir et le dévouement à une cause plus grande que soi.
