Ciblé par le FC Barcelone pour renforcer son attaque, Nico WILLIAMS a finalement décidé de rester fidèle à l’Athletic Bilbao. L’attaquant international espagnol a annoncé, ce vendredi 4 juillet 2025, la prolongation de son contrat jusqu’en juin 2035 avec le club basque.
L’annonce a été faite via une vidéo publiée sur la page Facebook officielle de l’Athletic Club. « Quand il faut prendre des décisions, le plus important est d’écouter son cœur. C’est ici que je veux être, avec les miens. C’est chez moi », a déclaré le joueur de 21 ans, visiblement ému, dans un message rapidement devenu viral sur les réseaux sociaux.
Cette décision surprend, alors que WILLIAMS était fortement pressenti pour rejoindre le Barça, cet été. La presse catalane voyait déjà l’international espagnol intégrer un quatuor offensif explosif aux côtés de Lamine Yamal, Raphinha et Lewandowski.
D’après El Chiringuito TV, le FC Barcelone aurait appris la nouvelle via la vidéo de l’Athletic Club publiée sur son compte X (ex-Twitter), ce qui témoigne du manque d’avancement réel dans les négociations.
Selon le journaliste italien Fabrizio ROMANO, le transfert de Nico WILLIAMS au Barça a échoué en raison de problèmes liés à l’inscription du joueur. L’ailier aurait exigé des garanties écrites de la part des dirigeants catalans, que ces derniers n’ont pas pu fournir.
