Dans un contexte marqué par les violences armées et l’instabilité politique, le Conseiller-Président Smith AUGUSTIN entame, ce mardi 8 avril 2025, une mission officielle à Washington et à New York. Il entend mobiliser l’aide internationale pour renforcer la sécurité et obtenir le soutien nécessaire à l’organisation des prochaines élections en Haïti.
À New York, Monsieur AUGUSTIN rencontrera des responsables des Nations Unies pour discuter du financement de la Mission Multinationale d’Appui à la Sécurité (MMAS). Le Gouvernement haïtien cherche à obtenir les 900 millions de dollars nécessaires pour déployer les 2 500 soldats de la mission. Cet appui international est crucial dans un contexte de sécurité de plus en plus fragile dans le pays.
À Washington, l’ancien diplomate se réunira avec le Secrétaire général de l’Organisation des États Américains (OEA) pour discuter du soutien technique et logistique demandé par Port-au-Prince. Il prévoit également des échanges avec l’Inter-American Defense Board pour mettre en place un programme de formation destiné à renforcer les capacités des Forces armées haïtiennes.
En parallèle, Smith AUGUSTIN mènera des rencontres avec la diaspora haïtienne à Washington et New York, abordant leur rôle dans les futures élections ainsi que leur intégration dans les processus politiques du pays.
Cependant, au-delà des discussions diplomatiques, la véritable épreuve pour Haïti résidera dans la capacité de l’État à traduire des engagements en actions concrètes sur le terrain. La confiance de la population, en quête de stabilité, dépendra de la mise en œuvre efficace de ces initiatives dans les mois à venir.
