Le ministère de l’Agriculture, des Ressources naturelles et du Développement rural a lancé hier, mardi 27 août 2024, une initiative ambitieuse pour revitaliser la filière cacao en Haïti. Un atelier a été organisé pour discuter du « Cadre stratégique de développement et de gouvernance de la chaîne de valeur du cacao », avec l’objectif de recueillir des recommandations concrètes pour redynamiser ce secteur en difficulté.
Le ministre de l’Agriculture, Vernet Joseph, a souligné que la production de cacao en Haïti a chuté de manière alarmante, passant de 20 000 tonnes en 1960 à seulement 5 000 tonnes en 2002. Cette baisse dramatique reflète les défis structurels du secteur ainsi qu’un manque de soutien et d’investissement durable.
Le cadre stratégique proposé vise à renforcer la compétitivité de la chaîne de valeur du cacao, à augmenter les revenus des producteurs, et à promouvoir des emplois décents. Des initiatives de restauration des bassins versants par l’exploitation durable du cacao sont également envisagées, ce qui pourrait contribuer à la protection de l’environnement et à l’amélioration de la qualité des cultures.
Bien que la production de cacao ait diminué, ce produit reste un élément clé de l’économie haïtienne, étant le troisième produit d’exportation du pays. Le ministère espère que ce plan stratégique non seulement relancera la production, mais repositionnera également Haïti comme un acteur majeur sur le marché mondial du cacao.
