Le Haut-Commissaire des Nations Unies aux droits de l’homme, Volker TÜRK, a exprimé hier, mercredi sa profonde inquiétude face à la violence croissante à Port-au-Prince. Des gangs armés tentent de contrôler la capitale et ses environs. En quelques jours, 150 personnes ont été tuées, 92 blessées, et 20 000 ont fui leurs foyers.
M. TÜRK a déclaré que les quatre millions d’habitants de Port-au-Prince sont presque pris en otage. Les gangs contrôlent toutes les routes principales de la ville. Il a averti que cette violence est un présage sombre et que la crise doit être arrêtée immédiatement pour éviter un chaos plus grand.
Plus de 55 % des décès sont dus aux affrontements entre gangs et police. Les lynchages par des foules augmentent également.
Dans la nuit du 18 au 19 novembre 2024, des gangs ont tenté de s’emparer de Pétion-Ville, un quartier encore contrôlé par la police. La veille, un assaut contre l’Académie nationale de police a été repoussé.
Le bilan pour 2024 est de 4 544 morts et 2 060 blessés. Les chiffres réels sont probablement plus élevés. En outre, 700 000 personnes ont été déplacées, dont la moitié sont des enfants.
M. TÜRK a souligné l’aggravation de la crise humanitaire en raison de l’insécurité, des pénuries alimentaires et de la propagation de maladies. Le système de santé est gravement affecté, et les travailleurs humanitaires sont menacés.
Il a appelé à renforcer la police haïtienne et à soutenir la Mission multinationale de sécurité en Haïti. « La violence des gangs ne doit pas l’emporter sur les institutions de l’État », a-t-il ajouté.
